Ottawa, Ontario (AHN) - After two months of declines, the number of Canadians receiving Employment Insurance benefits went up by 54,300 or 7.1 percent in September.

With the larger number, total EI beneficiaries in September rose to 818,000 up by 63.5 percent compared to October 2008 when employment was at its peak in Canada, according to Statistics Canada. By age group, hardest hit were young Canadians under 25, with the number of EI beneficiaries rising by 91.3 percent or 28,400 in the ninth month of 2009. By gender, young Canadian males suffered more as beneficiaries in this subgroup more than doubled to 41,100 from 20,100 the previous year. Among young Canadian women, the increase in number of EI recipients grew at a slower pace by 68.2 percent.
